The 7 Chakras: A Beginner's Map to Your Energy Body
6 min read
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning "wheel," and in the yogic and tantric traditions, it refers to one of several spinning centres of energy that run along the spine, from the base of your body to the crown of your head. You don't need to be able to see or measure them to find them useful. Think of the chakra system less as a belief you have to adopt and more as a map, a way of locating where in your body a feeling actually lives.
Most systems count seven major chakras. Each governs a different layer of experience, from your most basic sense of safety to your most abstract sense of meaning. When people say a chakra is "blocked," they usually mean that this particular layer of experience has gotten stuck, and the practice is simply to notice, and gently unstick it.
The Seven, Base to Crown
The Root (Muladhara), at the base of the spine, governs safety, stability, and your relationship with the physical world, money, home, and body. The Sacral (Svadhisthana), just below the navel, holds creativity, pleasure, and emotional flow. The Solar Plexus (Manipura), at the stomach, is your seat of personal power, willpower, and confidence.
The Heart (Anahata), at the centre of the chest, is exactly what it sounds like: love, compassion, and connection, both to others and to yourself. The Throat (Vishuddha) governs truth and self-expression, your ability to say what you actually mean. The Third Eye (Ajna), between the brows, holds intuition and inner clarity. And the Crown (Sahasrara), at the top of the head, is your connection to something larger than yourself, however you understand that.
You don't need to "fix" a chakra. You need to notice which one is asking for your attention, and listen to what it's actually saying.
How to Notice an Imbalance
You don't need special sight to feel this system at work. A tight, anxious stomach before a hard conversation is Solar Plexus energy. A closed throat when you swallow something you wish you'd said is Throat energy. A restless, ungrounded feeling during a period of financial or housing instability is Root energy, doing exactly what it's meant to do: telling you something needs attending to.
The goal isn't to force every chakra into permanent, perfect balance, that's not how energy, or life, actually works. It's to build enough awareness that you can recognise the pattern when it shows up, and respond to it consciously instead of being run by it.
Where to Start
If this is new to you, start simply: sit quietly, and scan from the base of your spine to the crown of your head, noticing where you feel tight, numb, or unusually alive. That alone is often enough to tell you where your attention is needed. From there, breathwork, movement, and honest reflection tend to do more than any crystal or chant.
In spiritual coaching sessions, I often use the chakra system alongside your birth chart and tarot to help locate exactly where an emotional pattern is rooted, and what it's asking you to work with next.
