The most common thing people say before their first tarot session is some version of, "I don't really believe in this, but..." I always tell them: good. Skepticism is a fine seat to read from. Tarot was never meant to override your judgment. It was meant to meet it.
A tarot deck is not a fortune-telling machine. It's a symbolic language, 78 images built from centuries of archetypes: the Fool's leap of faith, the Tower's necessary collapse, the Star's quiet return of hope. When you draw a card, you're not being told what will happen. You're being handed a mirror angled toward a part of your situation you may not have looked at directly yet.
Why the Cards "Know" Things
This is the question I get most often, and honestly, the mechanism matters less than the result. Whether you understand it as intuition, as pattern recognition, or as something more mysterious, a good reading consistently surfaces what you already sense but haven't said out loud. The cards give shape to a feeling you couldn't yet name.
I read intuitively, within the Rider-Waite tradition, which means I'm not reciting fixed meanings from a book. I'm reading the image, the position, the question you brought, and the way those things sit together. Two people could draw the same card on the same day and walk away with entirely different, entirely correct, interpretations.
Tarot doesn't hand you an answer. It hands you the right question.
What a Reading Can (and Can't) Tell You
A reading can tell you the emotional undercurrent of a decision, the pattern you keep repeating, the thing you're avoiding admitting. It can offer clarity on timing, on what a relationship actually needs, on what's blocking you from moving forward. What it won't do is remove your agency. You are always the one who decides what to do with what the cards show you.
That's the part I love most about this work. A tarot reading isn't a verdict handed down. It's a conversation, between you, the cards, and whatever part of you already knows more than you're giving yourself credit for.
