Mercury Retrograde: Separating Myth from Meaning

5 min read

A colourful nebula in deep space

Mercury retrograde has become the internet's favourite scapegoat, three or four times a year, everything from a slow WiFi connection to a breakup gets pinned on it. Some of that reputation is earned. Most of it is exaggerated. Here's what's actually happening, astronomically and astrologically, and how to work with the period instead of just surviving it.

Mercury doesn't actually move backward, it's an optical effect caused by the difference in orbital speed between Earth and Mercury, the same reason a car you're overtaking can briefly appear to move backward relative to you. But in a birth chart, what matters isn't the physics. It's what Mercury represents: communication, contracts, technology, travel, and the mechanics of daily thinking.

What Actually Tends to Go Sideways

During a retrograde, Mercury's usual clarity turns inward and gets muddier. Messages get crossed. Old contacts resurface. Devices act up. Signed agreements need a second look before you commit. None of this is punishment, it's Mercury asking you to slow down and re-check what you'd normally rush through.

Retrograde isn't a "don't." It's a "double-check."

How to Actually Use It

The most useful retrograde advice I give clients is to lean into the "re-" words: review, revise, reconnect, rest. It's a poor time to launch something new, sign a major contract without careful reading, or make an impulsive final decision. It's an excellent time to finish something you'd abandoned, repair a relationship that needs an honest conversation, or go back over a decision you made too quickly.

Where Mercury retrograde falls in your own chart, by house and sign, tells you exactly which area of life is asking for that second look this time around. For some people it lands in career, for others it's closer to home, in relationships or in how they talk to themselves.

If you want to know exactly what this retrograde (or your Mercury placement generally) means for you specifically, that's exactly the kind of thing a birth chart reading is built for.
